Your First PCP Air Rifle: What to Budget for the Complete Setup

Peter Palamara ·

A PCP rifle's price is only one line in the shopping list. Before comparing two rifles, price the equipment each one needs. A lower-priced rifle can become the more expensive setup if it needs a new air source, scope, mounts and adapters.

Start with a complete shopping list

  • The rifle: select the actual caliber and configuration you want; stock and prices can differ by option.
  • Ammunition: match the caliber and projectile type specified by the manufacturer. A .22 airgun pellet is not .22 rimfire ammunition, and airsoft BBs are not steel airgun BBs.
  • A fill source: a PCP needs an external source of high-pressure air. Check the rifle's manual, required connector and maximum fill pressure before choosing equipment.
  • Optics and mounts: check what is included. Match the mount to the rifle's rail and the scope's tube diameter, with clearance for the objective and magazine.
  • Protection and storage: include appropriate eye protection, a case and a suitable target/backstop for your intended shooting location.

Hand pump, tank or compressor?

A hand pump trades a smaller initial equipment purchase for physical effort. Consider reservoir size, pressure and how often you expect to refill. A tank makes portable fills convenient, but you also need a suitable refill service and compatible connections. A compressor can provide fills at home; compare its pressure rating, power supply, cooling requirements, moisture filtration and maintenance instructions. A unit designed to fill a rifle directly is not automatically approved to fill a large tank.

Use the instructions for both the rifle and fill equipment. Do not assume a general workshop compressor is suitable, and do not treat a higher equipment pressure rating as permission to exceed the rifle's limit.

Compare what you will carry

Weight listed for a bare rifle does not include a scope, mounts, case or fill gear. For a mobile setup, add those items to your comparison. Also check overall length and whether the case fits the assembled rifle.

A simple budget worksheet

Add the selected rifle price + fill source + required connector or adapter + scope + mounts + ammunition + protection and case. Subtract equipment you already own only after checking compatibility. Compare that total across up to three rifles with the comparison control on our collection pages.

Our filters help narrow the catalog by caliber, powerplant, action, regulated status and weight where those specifications are documented. A blank specification means it still needs confirmation; ask us before relying on it.
